A Speakeasy Cinema Talkie:
TITLE SEQUENCE
TITLE SEQUENCE
'Please open curtains before film starts.'
Otto Preminger had this directive to projectionists inscribed on film canisters holding The Man with the Golden Arm. He wanted to make sure the title designs by Saul Bass were seen by the audience.
A great title sequence can pre-empt a film with serious wow-factor. Indeed, sometimes, just sometimes, the titles are better than the film itself.
In July we kick off Speakeasy’s Talkies series by inviting a handful of creative doers and thinkers from Melbourne’s film and design communities to present their favourite title sequences. With a variety of tastes, backgrounds and experience between them, the speakers will share the sequences they love, those that have inspired them and the ones that have left their mark on cinema history.
Featuring presentations by Andrew Ashton (Studio Pip and Co.), Dom Bartolo (21-19), Stuart Geddes (Chase & Galley), Warren Taylor (The Narrows) and Suzy Tuxen (A Friend of Mine), this is a casual forum for film fans, cinephiles and designers alike.
Presented in collaboration with State of Design and Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, Title Sequence will take place at ACCA as part of Late Night Platform, a three-night series happening on and around the platforms created by artist Nathan Coley as part of his exhibition Appearances, currently showing at ACCA.
This event is completely free...and we’re almost certain someone in the SOD office made mention of an open bar, so our recommendation is to get there early. MIFF will be coincidentally roaring around this time, so we like to think Title Sequence will be the perfect beginning to a perfectly filmy weekend. Beatbox Kitchen’s roving Taco Truck will also be parked out front for all your snacking needs.
Title Sequence, 9-11pm, ACCA, 111 Sturt Street, Southbank. Click here for map, tram and parking info or ride and have your bike parked by a valet! The event is free to attend but please RSVP here.
*Due to last-minute commitments at Revelation Festival unfortunately Dirk de Bruyn is no longer able to present at Title Sequence.
